Haiti - FLASH : PM supports establishment of Gang Repression Force 10/09/2025 09:35:05
On Tuesday, September 9, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé participated via videoconference in a high-level meeting with the United Nations Security Council. On behalf of the Government and the people of Haiti, the Prime Minister firmly supported the draft resolution aimed at transforming the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) into a Gang Suppression Force (FRG), with a strengthened and operational mandate. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45656-haiti-flash-usa-proposes-a-more-aggressive-repression-force-against-gangs-with-more-than-5-000-men.html This development, eagerly awaited by the Haitian population, represents a decisive step towards supporting State authority, protecting communities, and contributing to national and regional stability. The Head of Government reiterated that the current situation requires responses tailored to the magnitude of the security challenges. He emphasized that the transformation of the current Kenyan-led mission into a gang repression force will also be a major asset in enabling Haiti to organize democratic elections as soon as possible, thus strengthening governance and institutional legitimacy. In this spirit, he reaffirms his commitment to international cooperation and solidarity among nations. He expresses his deep appreciation to the Security Council for its attention to the situation in the country and for its continued commitment to stability, peace, and the democratic process in Haiti. "During my address this morning to the UN Security Council, I reiterated that security remains essential to consolidate institutional foundations, revive the economy, and ensure credible, free, and transparent elections. I affirmed the Haitian government's resolute support for the transformation of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) into a strategic force capable of waging an intensive and targeted fight against the armed groups that threaten our country. This development is essential to restore stability, protect citizens, and offer the Haitian people security, hope, and sustainable development prospects. Now is the time for immediate action and collective commitment." Haiti is convinced that the adoption and swift implementation of this draft resolution will reflect the collective will of the international community to support the Haitian people in their legitimate aspirations for security, peace, dignity, and democracy. As a reminder, on August 28, 2025, the United States and Panama presented to the Security Council a plan to transform the Kenyan mission in Haiti into a "gang suppression force" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45656-haiti-flash-usa-proposes-a-more-aggressive-repression-force-against-gangs-with-more-than-5-000-men.html With an expanded mandate and greater autonomy from the PNH, it would have a strength of 5,500 troops. Salaries would be funded by voluntary contributions, while a new UN Support Office would take charge of logistical and operational support. See also : HL/ S/ HaitiLibre
