Haiti - Diplomacy : Review and wishes of the American Ambassador Henry T. Wooster 24/12/2025 08:45:19
At the end of 2025, American Ambassador Henry T. Wooster, accredited to Haiti, took stock of the highlights of this year and presented his holiday season wishes : Message from Ambassador Wooster : "2025 has been a year of profound hardship for Haiti. In a context marked by insecurity, forced displacement https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45193-haiti-social-14-million-people-displaced-in-haiti.html , and political uncertainty, the Haitian people have once again demonstrated remarkable resilience. We also remember the important decisions made throughout the year, the courageous steps forward, and the positive developments that uplifted Haitians. I would first like to congratulate Haiti on the historic qualification of its national soccer team for the World Cup, 51 years after its last appearance https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-46239-haiti-flash-haiti-has-qualified-for-the-2026-world-cup-video.html. I was also delighted about the inclusion of compas (konpa) on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-46403-icihaiti-tourism-international-recognition-of-compas-a-solemn-moment-for-haiti.html. These remarkable achievements and the well-deserved recognition demonstrate Haiti is not just a country of gang violence; it is a culturally rich, joyful country full of resilient people. On the security front, it is also important to commend the courage and determination of the Haitian National Police (HNP), who, despite particularly difficult conditions, continue to stand up to armed gangs and protect their communities. The United States remains a steadfast partner in supporting their efforts through training, equipment, and technical assistance. The vote by the United Nations Security Council authorizing the deployment of the Gang Suppression Force marked a step forward in the fight against terrorist gangs https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45891-haiti-flash-the-security-council-has-voted-for-the-new-gang-repression-force.html . Thanks to an unprecedented international mobilization – united by the shared goal of helping Haiti regain control of its future – the Gang Suppression Force will have 5,500 forces next year with enhanced capabilities to support and reinforce the HNP in restoring security and stability. I want to personally acknowledge and thank the countries who have stepped up so far to commit resources and support to the GSF. The transition government asked the international community for help, and countries near and far have answered that call https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-46457-haiti-flash-countries-pledge-up-to-7-500-troops-to-the-gsf-in-haiti.html The year was also marked by important institutional progress, notably the publication of the electoral decree, an essential step toward launching the process that will lead to the restoration of constitutional order and the organization of elections https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-46330-haiti-elections-the-electoral-decree-unanimously-adopted-by-the-council-of-ministers.html. The United States stands with Haiti during this process and continues to urge the Haitian government to act quickly to organize elections that will allow Haitians to vote for their leaders in 2026. The United States sanctioned, detained, and arrested individuals who are destabilizing Haiti this year. These individuals were in Haiti or in the United States, and supporting gangs through arms smuggling, financing, or other means. The Trump Administration will continue to hold these people accountable, including those we seek to destabilize Haiti and stay in power for their own selfish gains. For the United States, the era of impunity in Haiti is over. The year ahead holds promise: the opportunity to get the country back on track, starting with the restoration of security and the organization of free and fair elections. This is a chance to move toward a safe and prosperous Haiti that Haitians deserve, guided by a government freely chosen by the people themselves. In this season of reflection and wishes, I want to acknowledge hard-working Haitians of all walks of life that continue to work to build their country and contribute to Haitian society. In my six months in Haiti, I have heard from many Haitians about what they envision for the country and their hope for a better future. A safer and more prosperous Haiti is possible. On behalf of the entire U.S. Embassy team, I want to wish Haitians a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year "!
