Haiti - FLASH : Presidential advisors confirm their decision to dismiss the PM

On Friday, January 23, 2024, at the Villa d’Acceuil, presidential advisors Leslie Voltaire and Edgard Leblanc Fils held a press conference where they confirmed the decision to dismiss Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, despite international pressure. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-46692-haiti-flash-dismissal-of-the-pm-raises-tensions-between-the-international-community-and-the-cpt.html

"The international community will have to acknowledge our decisions and support us according to the guidelines we define for the country," declared Edgard Leblanc Fils.

Leslie Voltaire indicated that despite all the efforts deployed by the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) to support Government action, the population's expectations had not been met. Consequently, five members—Fritz Alphonse Jean, Leslie Voltaire, Louis Gérald Gilles, Edgard Leblanc Fils, and Smith Augustin, representing the majority decided to adopt a resolution dismissing Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and appointing another member of the same government to ensure a smooth transition and help the country find the best way to manage the political transition period following the departure of the CPT on February 7 (end of its mandate).

For his part, Edgard Leblanc Fils stated that the decision to change Prime Ministers, made to allow the CPT to remain in power for a short period, was judicious. He announced the appointment of a new Head of Government for a 30-day period to facilitate the political transition.

Edgard Leblanc Fils stated that the official document (the resolution) should be sent to the national press this Friday for publication in the official journal. This is highly unlikely, as Laurent Saint-Cyr, President pro tempore and Coordinator of the Transitional Council, the authority responsible for publishing the resolution in the Official Gazette, is fiercely opposed to this dismissal. Presidential advisors answered journalists' questions and reiterated that the international community has no power to dictate decisions in Haiti. It is up to Haitians to make decisions for Haitians to promote the country's stability.

It should be noted that no copy of this resolution, which they are said to have signed, nor a copy of the official journal, Le Moniteur, has been shown to the media, nor has the name of the next Prime Minister been revealed.

It should also be noted that the security forces, which have not been actively involved in politic since 1994, have sided with Prime Minister Fils-Aimé and President Laurent Saint-Cyr.
