Haiti - Politic : Preparations and security for the 1st edition of the Diaspora Fair

On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, as part of the preparations for the 1st edition of the Diaspora Fair, scheduled to take place on November 6-7, 2026, in Cap-Haïtien, Minister of Tourism Stéphanie Smith is taking a proactive, strategic role in promoting the destination, enhancing its appeal, and improving the conditions for welcoming and ensuring the safety of visitors.

In this context, Minister Smith met with Ms. Aucelie Rock, head of the Tourist Police (PoliTOUR), to discuss strengthening the tourism security framework, particularly in the northern region and at the Cap-Haïtien International Airport.

The discussions identified several priority initiatives, including an immediate increase in the PoliTOUR presence at Cap-Haïtien International Airport, coordinated with the National Airport Authority (AAN) and airport security services, to better facilitate the arrival and orientation of visitors.

The establishment of a permanent PoliTOUR detachment at the Ministry of Tourism’s headquarters is also among the measures being considered to bolster security and provide better support for institutional activities.

Beyond the arrangements for the Diaspora Fair, the Ministry intends to support the gradual expansion of PoliTOUR’s territorial coverage, specifically in the Greater South and the Northeast. Plans also include upgrading the equipment and uniforms of the officers, as well as recruiting fifty additional agents to better address the security needs of the country’s tourist sites. Furthermore, Minister Smith previously took part in a consultative meeting with Katia Verdier, Minister for Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), regarding the progress of preparations for the Diaspora Fair. The meeting brought together representatives from the Haitian National Police, the Cap-Haitien municipal government, the General Administration of Customs, and the Ministry of Public Works to discuss the importance of collaboration and the mobilization of all stakeholders to ensure the event’s realization and success. The session underscored the value of dialogue, cooperation, and a shared commitment to strengthening ties between the diaspora and local communities.

This inaugural edition of the Diaspora Fair, initiated by the MHAVE in collaboration with the Ministries of Culture and Tourism, and held under the high patronage of the Office of the Prime Minister, aims to create a space for meeting, sharing, and showcasing culture, talent, and economic opportunities. It will enable Haitians living abroad and local stakeholders to forge new partnerships and reinforce their connections, thereby contributing to the country’s development.
