Haiti - Social : STAIA asks a wage increase for university teachers

The « Sendika travayè Anseyan Inivèsite Ayiti » (STAIA), of the State University of Haiti (UEH) regrets that the State University does not have a sufficient operating budget, while its needs are constantly increasing. The Union believes that the UEH can not afford to maintain its teachers and members of its skilled staff, because of too low wages and the lack of benefits (housing and health...).

A full-time teacher earns about 40,000 gourdes per month [minimum 3 courses per session]. A teacher named 4,650 gourdes [for one course] and a contractual 27.000 gourdes per session.

The Union therefore asks to the Parliament, to increase the budget of the UEH [currently 904 million gourdes for 2012-2013] in order to meet to the improvement of salary conditions of teachers and of staff members, asserting "It is impossible for a professional working in a university to live with this miserable wages..."
