Haiti - Social : The Government firmly committed to resolving the housing problem

The passage of Isaac demonstrates once again the vulnerability of 400,000 IDPs of January 12 still living under tents in difficult conditions. The Government is committed more than ever to find lasting solutions to the housing of most disadvantaged.

Since the announcement of the arrival of the storm Isaac, the Government has adopted preventive measures to protect the population. Thus, an inter-governmental coordination without precedent was established.

While the damage assessment is ongoing, and in order to avoid the multiplication once again of temporary housing solutions, the Government strongly wishes that the international partners support in priority the return in neighborhoods in accommodation safe and dignified "The international community must continue to support the national program of the Government in terms of relocation final of the victims of 2010. The problem should be solved [...]" stressed the President Martelly.

Several major programs are already underway, including the program 16/6 of the Government and other initiatives supported by NGOs that have enabled the relocation of tens of thousands of Haitians with dignity and under the control of Government explained the Head of State "The success of this strategy of resettlement of victims, shows that the approach of return to neighborhoods with rental subsidy, has proved to be effective [...] This effort was a perfect example of collaboration between the Government, the International Community, the various operators both domestic and international, as well as community-based organizations and other stakeholders."

The Government encourages the international community, donors and the private sector to channel funding towards the support to rents, in the post-Isaac emergency phase.

"We are firmly committed to resolving the housing problem in Haiti permanently and thank the international community for its unwavering support. We invite all our partners, to work in the same direction that the Government's efforts, by supporting existing programs," declared the Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe.
