Haiti - Social : Laurent Lamothe met with Ivan Simonovic

Friday, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, met with Ivan Šimonović, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, in four-day mission to Haiti to assess the progress of the situation of human rights.

The two men discussed issues related to the strengthening of the capacity of the Police in order to consolidate a force that ensures the safety of citizens and enable them to exercise their citizenship. They also discussed of the reform of the justice of the necessity to include a section to promote human rights in the national strategy on the rule of law. Conditions of detention, the fight against corruption, public policies were also on the agenda of this meeting.

Head of Government, informed Mr. Šimonović, of the progress of his team in the implementation of the National Institution of Human Rights with the creation of the Office of the Minister Delegate for Human Right and the fight against extreme poverty, which is already working on the idea of creating a national observatory of human rights.

During his visit to Haiti, Mr. Ivan Šimonović also met with Marie Carmelle Rose Anne Auguste, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister in charge of Human Rights, the Presidents of both Houses of Parliament, officials of the United Nations Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah), as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps.
