Following our revelations about the scandal of the slaughterhouse of Jacmel, last July 13 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-6130-jacmel-health-the-slaughterhouse-of-the-city-of-jacmel-a-real-scandal.html , the Town Hall of Jacmel began last week, major rehabilitation works of the only slaughterhouse in the city.

This new slaughterhouse will meet modern health standards. A cold room will be constructed to allow butchers to keep their meat and a hydraulic system will be installed so that the butchers have water to wash the giblets. In addition, a health inspection service will be set up to examine the animals before slaughter.

The work in progress are an initiative of the Municipal Council of Jacmel, which mobilized own funds of the Town Hall to renovate the slaughterhouse, which was in a serious state of disrepair. In an exclusive interview granted to HaitiLibre, the Mayor of Jacmel, Hugues Paul declared the last article published on this website, had exposed the deplorable situation in which the meat was consumed in Jacmel.

"The unsanitary conditions in which the butchers kill animals, was indeed scandalous. This heckled my conscience to act so quickly," declared the Mayor of Jacmel. The latter indicated that this construction will also consider the environment of the preschool "le Nid des Oiseaux", located next to the slaughterhouse. A playground will be built for the children, who used to go and play close to the slaughterhouse without considering the unhealthy and health risks, of these places.

Mr. Hugues Paul, gave the assurance that the new slaughterhouse, will no longer release unpleasant odors as the old building 30 years old. The mayor did not want to specify the budget allocated to this work, preferring to talk of a possible support from other partners in the construction, citing as an example, an institution of the city of Jacmel, which has already made available to the Town Hall a generator that will supply the cold room, a donation that encourages initiative, says Paul.

Regarding the tax, that will be asked to butchers, for the use of the slaughterhouse, the Mayor stated, that it remained to be determined after the completion of the work.

Mayor Paul reiterated its commitment to continue to work for the advancement of the city of Jacmel and invited the population of the municipality to assume its responsibility concerning the management of the slaughterhouse, because it is the main concerned by the state of unhealthiness, in which was the slaughter of Jacmel.
