Haiti - Politic : Martelly, harmonization of relations between Church and State

The President Michel Martelly, met last week, the Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti (CEH), at the headquarters of Lillavois. This meeting, tinged with cordiality between the President Michel Martelly and the Haitian Catholic Bishops, was the opportunity to explore the possibilities of a better harmonization of relations between the State and the Church and to identify the ways and means available to support the priorities of the new administration. Other important issues relevant to education, health, unemployment and reconstruction were discussed.

Recalling that the Holy See was the first state to recognize Haiti's independence, the members of the CEH are committed to remain alongside the Haitian people while calling for the cooperation of all citizens to achieve the reconstruction of Haiti. "We believe that the reconstruction of Haiti must pass through the promotion of integral development of the Haitian people We hope that the cry of this people will not be silent, but constantly resonates in you to find the ways and means which lead the Haitian nation to regain its pride among the peoples of the Caribbean and the earth", declared the Archbishop of Cap-Haitien, Mgr Louis Kébreau.

This meeting with the members of the CEH, follows a series of meetings initiated by the President-elect, upon publication of the results proclaiming his victory, where he had to meet, over the past two weeks, among others, the representative of Secretary General of the UN, members of the Club of Madrid, the President of the International Monetary Fund, of the World Bank, the direction of Inter-American Development Bank, the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, members of the Diplomatic Corps, prominent members of the American press and key members of the Haitian business community.

These meetings aim to affirm and testify, to the national and international communities, of the dynamism of the new administration and its desire to change things in order to effectively meet the needs of the Haitian people.
