Haiti - FLASH : El Salvador confirms the deployment of more than 2,000 Salvadoran soldiers to Haiti

On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the government of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele confirmed, via a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the deployment of over 2,000 soldiers to Haiti. The mission aims to rescue four Salvadoran military technicians—members of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), missing following an ambush on October 18, 2026, in the locality of Santo, 12 km from Port-au-Prince (https://www.haitilibre.com/article-48701-haiti-flash-les-4-militaires-salvadoriens-du-blinde-incendie-portes-disparus.html). The Haitian government has characterized the incident as a kidnapping and has stated that locating the four soldiers is an absolute priority.

The statement confirms that President Bukele spoke by phone with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. Their discussion focused on the rescue operation being conducted by El Salvador on Haitian soil, as well as the continuation of the mission that the Salvadoran government has deployed in the country.

"El Salvador will proceed with the operational deployment of more than two thousand soldiers to rescue the four Salvadoran technicians, as part of a large-scale operation supported by various countries and international organizations," the Ministry indicated in its statement.

Bukele emphasized the "scale of the operation" to rescue the Salvadoran soldiers, while reaffirming El Salvador’s commitment to continue supporting security efforts against gangs in Haiti, the text adds. In a statement, the Haitian Prime Minister, who held his first-ever phone conversation with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele regarding the military deployment in Haiti and the search for four missing service members, noted that both Nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral coordination and operational cooperation. This includes efforts within the framework of the mission to support search operations and address security challenges.

The Haitian government expressed its solidarity with the abducted Salvadoran service members and their families, reiterating its determination to work alongside its partners to restore security and stability in the country.

The Haitian government remains fully engaged, in coordination with its partners, and reaffirmed its commitment to cooperation that respects the authority of the Haitian state, with the ultimate goal of achieving a lasting restoration of national security.
