Haiti - Politic : Antonio Patriota met with President Michel Martelly

During his second visit to Haiti, Antonio Patriota, the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, met yesterday Monday, the President Michel Martelly, to discuss of the bilateral cooperation Brazil-Haiti. The two men have reviewed the Brazilian aid in the process of reconstruction of the country, the technical cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

The cooperation Brazil-Haiti was particularly strengthened since 2004 in several areas. In the health sector, this resulted in the construction of hospitals. In infrastructure, the Brazil funds the initial stage of the dam project in the Artibonite, "a subject that was discussed with Mr. Martelly", stressed Antonio Patriota during a press conference before his departure. Brazil is also present in Haiti in the field of agriculture, through a Brazilian company of research [EMBRAPA], which pilot agricultural projects in Kenscoff and Fond-des-Nègres. The sport has not been forgotten, because since April 2011, eleven young Haitian players from 11 to 14, are training as part of a program of six months, in one of the major football clubs in Brazil [the Ole Football Club].

After the meeting the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs met with Mariano Fernández Amunátegui, the new Head of Civil UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah) and the Force Commander of the Brazilian Military Mission. With a workforce of 2.192 people, the Brazil is the largest contributor of troops of the Minustah, with two infantry battalions and one engineer company.

The Brazilian minister stressed that at the next renewal of the mandate of UN Mission in October, a "downsizing could be envisaged with the maintenance of the engineering company". However, he wished to clarify that no decision will be made before the conclusion of the report of the Consultative Group of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on the issue.
