Haiti - foreign intervention : Demonstrations, looting, violence and vandalism

On Monday, several thousand Haitians took to the streets in the country, responding to calls from the opposition to protest against the government and its call for foreign aid to end gangs, the humanitarian crisis and fight against the rapidly spreading epidemic cholera.

In Port au Prince barricades of burning tires and tree branches were reported on the Lalue road while many roads were blocked and businesses closed. The demonstration in the capital was peppered with violence, scenes of looting and the police had to use tear gas to disperse the looters. Reported several gunshot wounds and one person killed in unclear circumstances.

In Gonaïves all institutions have kept their doors closed. Individuals vandalized and looted the premises of the Peace Court of the Southern Section, the Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeal. Demonstrators attacked and ransacked the office of the Artibonite Health Department and the regional office of the Counter-Tier Vehicle Insurance Office (OAVCT). Documents and materials from these institutions were taken away by the looters. Several businesses were also victims of looting.

In Cap Haitien an Unibank branch at rue 3 was attacked. A group of protesters tried in vain to set it on fire while another group attacked the bank before the police intervention which put the thugs to flight.

In Jacmel at the regional Caritas distribution center. the crowd looted and set fire to 5 containers, kerosene stoves and bags of rice were carried away. A complaint has been filed. In addition, 3 vehicles were set on fire.

The opposition is surfing on the intervention in Haiti of a special force of which one do not know what form it will take, but which should not be led under the aegis of the United Nations (no blue helmets) according to United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres who suggests that this force should instead be led by a member State which would execute it alone or with the support of other nations, according to a letter sent to the Security Council.

However, if the opposition is unanimous in opposing a possible foreign intervention, and in favor of taking power without going through elections, it seems that the population is rather favorable according to a poll carried out by Radio Télé Scoop on 311 people. 81% say they are in favor and 19% unfavorable. A poll which is not representative of the entire population but which is an indication of the division of opinions.
