More than 17,000 dead and injured (in 2 years)

As of December 23, since the beginning of 2024, the United Nations Integrated Office (BINUH) in Haiti and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) have recorded more than 5,350 people killed and more than 2,155 others injured, as a direct result of gang violence. This brings the total number of deaths and injuries to more than 17,000 since 2022.

A merchant ship capsizes at the port of Varreux

On Monday, December 23, 2024, a merchant ship, the "MAELYS Lome II" sailing from Port-au-Prince to Petit-Goâve, carrying goods, vehicles and passengers, did not have time to set sail and capsized at the port of Varreux. Negligence or overloading ? The causes of this incident are unknown. Several dozen vehicles and trucks loaded with goods fell into the sea. The Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH) was unable to confirm the number of people reported missing, explaining that individuals looting goods had drowned according to testimonies. An investigation is underway to discover the circumstances of this rare type of accident...

DR : Accident of a DGM truck carrying 35 Haitian women

On Monday, December 23, 2024, a vehicle belonging to the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) carrying 35 Haitian women in an irregular migratory situation from the Haina reception center to the Elías Piña border post collided with another vehicle loaded with agricultural products in the municipality of Pedro Corto, province of San Juan. According to the DGM, one Haitian woman died and several others were slightly injured and transported to the Alejandro Cabral hospital, where they received medical care.

Towards the reopening of the General Hospital

This Monday, December 23, 2024, the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Duckenson Lorthé BLEMA, chaired an important meeting with the main officials of the General Hospital, including the heads and doctors of service to discuss preparations for the reopening of the largest university hospital in Haiti. During this meeting, the Minister proceeded to install Dr. Prince Pierre Sonson as the new Executive Director of the General Hospital.
