Haiti - Politic : Tour of President of the Transitional Council in the North 19/03/2025 09:54:28
As part of efforts to strengthen strategic infrastructure and boost the regional economy, Fritz Alphonse Jean, President pro tempore of the Transition Council (CPT), toured the North and Northeast departments from March 16 to 18, 2025. This provided an opportunity for Fritz Alphonse Jean to engage directly with businesspeople and investors from the North and Northeast, as well as from the diaspora, on investment opportunities and available sources of financing. During this tour, he met with businesspeople from the diaspora and members of the North Chamber of Commerce to discuss investments related, in particular, to the redevelopment of Cap-Haïtien International Airport. Airport construction and infrastructure management professionals from the United States participated in the discussions and have already secured the necessary financing for this first phase. Discussions also focused on the application for authorization for a free trade zone in Chinouette, an initiative led by a group of entrepreneurs from the North, Northeast, and the diaspora, which aims to promote industrialization and job creation in the region. As part of this mission, a working meeting and a visit were organized to the Caracol Industrial Park, a major economic hub in the Northeast. The park, which employed 12,500 workers a few months ago, has now seen its workforce reduced to approximately 3,500 due to the difficulties encountered in Haiti by the companies located there. Faced with this critical situation, the CPT intends to explore solutions to revive this strategic industrial zone. Improving access to energy was also discussed. The ongoing construction of two solar power plants with a total capacity of 12 megawatts, which will be added to the existing 10 megawatts of thermal power, should provide a more reliable energy supply for factories and surrounding communities. Furthermore, a meeting with community leaders provided insight into the education situation in the region. The discussions highlighted the shortage of teachers in some classrooms, a major challenge for access to quality education. HL/ HaitiLibre
