Turtle Island Shipwreck

On Friday, August 22, 2025, a boat from Cap-Haïtien bound for Nippes sank off the coast of Turtle Island. The boat was carrying 16 passengers and hundreds of bags of rice, according to a local witness. No loss of life was reported; the entire cargo was a total loss.

Arms Trafficking : Former US Police Officer Arrested and Sentenced

Michael Adrian Nieto, a former US police officer, was arrested and sentenced for buying and selling more than 58 firearms. These were then smuggled into Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, where they supplied criminal groups. Found guilty, he was sentenced to three years in federal prison. Precautionary measures against 15 security agents
