Haiti - FLASH : Haiti is «a country at war» declared Saint Cyr at the UN (video of the speech) 26/09/2025 09:15:10
On Thursday, September 25, 2025, Laurent Saint-Cyr, President pro tempore and coordinator of the Transitional Council, spoke at the UN podium during the 80th General Assembly, where he painted a grim picture of the situation in Haiti, calling it one of the most serious human tragedies in the Northern Hemisphere. "[...] Haiti finds itself at the epicenter of an unprecedented regional threat. Powerful and heavily armed criminal networks seek to destabilize the country and dominate the economies of our entire shared space [...]" "Every day, innocent lives are extinguished by bullets, fire, and fear. Entire neighborhoods are disappearing, forcing more than a million people into internal exile and destroying memories, investments, and infrastructure. Thousands of children are deprived of their fundamental right to education; thousands of young people are condemned to despair. Hundreds of raped girls and women forever bear, in their flesh and souls, the scars of violence." Supported by figures and facts, Saint-Cyr did not hesitate to declare, "Haiti is a country at war. A war between criminals who want to impose violence as the social order and an unarmed population [...]" launching an appeal to the international community : "[...] Today, the international community must, alongside Haiti, deploy drastic measures : no half-measures, but strong, coordinated, and immediate action. Silence or inaction is not an option. We must act quickly [...] Every minute lost translates into sacrificed human lives and a setback for democracy." Saint-Cyr concluded his 18-minute speech by emphasizing "[...] The international community has no right to look away from the situation in Haiti [...] Faced with the magnitude of this crisis, silence would not be neutrality, but complicity [...] This is why I call on you to stand with Haiti. We must build peace in Haiti, for the Caribbean, for the Americas, for all humanity."
